Southampton (NY) High School Class of 1958

Milestone Celebrations!

NYC photo We love New York!

This spring we (Linda Levenson, Barbara Hinck, Polly Grenis and Anne Oliver) returned to a place we had been before. Coming back to the Big Apple and playing tourist was great fun. By the end of the week-long visit we had almost caught up on each other's lives and we all agreed that New York is only getting better! We visited several museums, explored Ellis Island, attended a night game at Yankee Stadium and enjoyed a show at the Apollo Theater. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful.

Jim O'Brien mentioned that he and Sue had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Florida with their family. I started to think about the other important milestones each of us has celebrated since our 50th Class Reunion in 2008 and might want to share with others. Anniversaries, marriages, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, special trips, mini-reunions with others in the class, volunteer activities, TV appearances, publication of memoirs, etc.

I mentioned this to webmaster John Rose and he thought it might add a good balance to the website which is tending to announce the sadder events of illness and death.

The SHS website has worked very well keeping those who have e-mail in touch and informed. If you have something special to share, send a photo (it's worth a thousand words) or a few remarks or both to John and he will add it to the website.

We can keep connected with our past as well as our present and the future.

A diesel mechanic, he also worked at other jobs, including as a tractortrailer driver, a part-time snowplow driver, an oil platform ferry captain, a scalloper, and promoting his wave abatement invention. If it was broken, Mr. Greene would commence to fix it, family recalled, whether it was an engine, a child's toy or a friend's troubles.

Mr. Greene had a great love of the water that he has passed down to his children. In 2002, he retired to Pamlico County where he enjoyed living and playing on the water. He earned his captain's license in 2004 and was also a volunteer for the Southeast Pamlico Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Oriental Dance Club and Alliance United Methodist Church.

According to survivors, Mr. Greene was happiest when surrounded by family, friends, and neighbors. As a loving husband, father and friend, they said, he was always willing to give a helpful hand to anyone. One of his tenants remarked that "Dick was the only Yankee that I could call a friend."

He is survived by his wife, Tatiana Greene of North Carolina; a daughter, Carol and her husband Paul Ansberry of Nevada; a son, Richard Greene Jr, and his wife Liz of California; two grandchildren, Jake and Jordan; three stepchildren, Jana, Ilia and Zhenya; and two step-grandchildren, Masha and Sasha.
